The Kankakee Valley Adult Reading and Literacy Program is a private non-profit
organization that is funded completely by grants and donations. Because
they are a private organization, there are no state rules that apply which
makes this program much more flexible and able to reach out to a wider
variety of people and ethnic groups.
The director
of the Kankakee Valley Adult Reading and Literacy Program is Connie Bland.
Connie
has 16 years experience in adult tutoring and has worked with over 200
tutors and over 400 students through her area. She does information programs
at the Kankakee
County Health Department to recruit students and provide books for at
risk children to take home. Her husband and she do regular book drives
from various libraries for the children's program and they started the
library in Pembroke several years ago. They have also supplied Indian
Oaks Academy with books and tutors, as well as Brandon House at Diversatech
and the Women's Prison on Rt. 102.
Many of
the students in Connie's area have been ESL (English Second Language)
students who benefit greatly from one-on-one tutoring. There have been
students from China, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, India, Taiwan, Puerto
Rico, Chile, Africa, Korea and many from Mexico. She expects a high population in this
program from Mexico because of referrals from students she has worked
with.
Connie is
the mother of 5 children, grandmother of 14 and great grandmother of 6. Her hobbies include reading,
singing, gardening, travel, crocheting and church-related activities.
Connie has
attended more than 20 conferences over the years and has held a multitude
of training sessions for tutors, therefore has had on-going education
in the program.
